New studio and start date announced.
Variety reports that Universal Pictures has come to the rescue of Hellboy 2. The studio has agreed to bankroll and distribute the sequel to 2004 comic book movie, which was left in limbo after Revolution Studios was shuttered.
"There are few properties which offer this unique blend of action, humor and character-based spectacle," Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger told the trade paper.
Guillermo del Toro will return to direct Hellboy 2, which is set for a summer 2008 bow. Filming is slated to commence this April in Budapest and London.
Also returning for the sequel are stars Ron Perlman and Selma Blair as Hellboy and his love interest Liz, respectively.
The sequel will expand the world of Hellboy and surround him with characters both new and familiar as he confronts a deadly threat to mankind.
The film's producers are Lawrence Gordon, Mike Richardson, Lloyd Levin and Joe Roth. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola will serve as a co-producer, while Chris Kenney is exec producer.
