Noview Movie Review: Basic Instinct 2
Tuesday, February 21, 2006
Arriving 14 years after the original Basic Instinct, there’s something sad about Basic Instinct 2. Like Terminator 3, you sense that the day has passed for both the franchise and the star, and that you’re watching the sort of B movie that fading actors do when times get tough.
Sharon Stone is 48 now and still playing novelist Catherine Tramell who is once again in trouble with the law, this time in England. Scotland Yard appoints psychiatrist Dr. Andrew Glass (David Morrissey) to evaluate her. The typically uptight Limey diagnoses her as risk addictive, and like Detective Nick Curran before him, Glass loses himself in her web of seduction.
Titillation has its place. There’s always room for a movie that has everything you like about porn, but is still a legitimate release. Basic Instinct 2 has a plot involving murder and intrigue, and the sex isn’t overly graphic. Also, it wasn’t shot in one day at a house in Van Nuys. You can take a date to see Basic Instinct 2. Not a first date, though. Wait for that critical third date. Better yet, wait for it to come out on DVD when you both can watch the uncensored cut back at your place.
